Speak Up, Stay Safe is a new campaign from the British Safety Council. Our mission is twofold:
- To highlight the dangers that young people face every day in the workplace
- To encourage young people to speak up if they feel in an unsafe situation
This year 350,000 young people aged 14 – 19 will go on work experience. It is estimated that 200,000 will do this over the next few months.
Every 40 minutes a young person is injured in the workplace.
In the last 10 years, 66 young people have died in workplace accidents.
In 2009, over 3,200 young people were seriously injured in the workplace. This statistic is scary yet preventable. The British Safety Council feels passionately about the safety of our young workers.
Over the next few weeks we will be providing safety advice and tips to students, parents, teachers and employers. The message to young people is if at anytime they or their friends feel in a vulnerable situation to Speak Up, Stay Safe.
