The British Safety Council is offering every young person between the ages of 14-19 years old a free health and safety qualification. Organising work experience for students can be difficult and fraught with problems. Here at the BSC we’re hoping to help by offering this free qualification (which we also mark) to help young people understand the dangers.
Download our FREE poster specially directed at young people.
The summer term is one of the most popular for work experience placements and our campaign Speak Up, Stay Safe is aimed directly at young people to highlight and educate them in an engaging way.
There are three key things that you can do to help keep young people safe on their workplace:
- Make sure your students are properly prepared for their work experience or job
- Encourage them to talk to you if they have any worries or concerns
- Sign up to the British Safety Council’s FREE entry level qualification in workplace hazard awareness
Tell them about our special YouTube and Twitter pages where they can get handy tips and share their experiences.

“Because of the number of accidents involving young people and their inability to make the link with work and health and safety, I think it’s important that it is taught in schools so they understand the relevance of health and safety in the workplace. I think it should have a place in the curriculum.”
Sandra, Work Experience Co-ordinator at Beaconsfield School
Sorry to be negative, but this section for ‘teachers’ does not really contain anything directly relating to the responsibility they have to look after young persons whilst at school, college or out on educational activities.
How about a teacher information pack containing information on things such as risk assessments, relative regulations and best practice, and links to good information sources? I think we miss a big trick in the UK with H&S at schools – it’s used as an excuse not to do things but there is not much action taken to use it properly to enable fun but safe activity.
Hi Mick,
Thanks for your comment. It is really good to get feedback and see what we can do better and offer more information to support teachers.
This link at the HSE has some good guidance – http://www.hse.gov.uk/schooltrips/index.htm and includes risk assessments etc. Also this speech from Judith Hackitt CBE, earlier in the year to the Schools Heath and Safety Conference might be of interest. – http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/speeches/transcripts/hackitt110310.htm

Don’t forget those at Further Education Colleges who are also responsible for young people up to the age of 19, and those (like the one in which I work) which have a bespoke learning area catering for 14-16 year olds. How about guidance for us too?
You might want to have a look at this Yahoo Groups which is specifically dedicated to Education and where users can drop off items like RAs for others to use….you will find checklists etc under “Files” and some 500 articles with links which can be searched by topic
Thank you for this site. I am the WEX co-ordinator at a school in London and I have used you materials and links for a lesson on health and safety on placement to be delivered to our year 10 cohort.
However. I am mildly confused… Your promotional material seems to relate to a site that is not this one I see no links to “giraffes coming a cropper” Am I missing something?
